Time to Vote

There are many posts on social media at the moment about the upcoming marriage equality postal vote. Many suggesting we should boycott the vote to make a stand and others suggesting we should fill the envelope with glitter before sending it back. I thought I might address these issues.

Firstly, not voting doesn't help. OK, this postal vote is not the approach the majority wants. Most of Australia would love to see our oh so fantastic Government (sarcasm font) legalise same sex marriage already and stop wasting time and money. But we don't live in an ideal world where our representing parliament actually cares about... You know... Morals. Or money. Because there's nothing better they could do with that funding is there?

But this is what we have so we should make the best of it. What good is not voting? Do you actually think the people at the top care if you don't vote? Nope. They don't. But if you do vote at least your opinion gets added to the masses and it may well make a difference. If you look at situations where optional votes are held and people choose to abstain, for what ever reason, you end up with Brexit and Trump. All you're doing is rejecting an opportunity to have your say and no one that matters cares about your protest.

As for the glitter... Sounds fun, sure! But something like this may well invalidate your vote. The glitter is not being sent to anyone that matters either, just volunteers opening envelopes who will likely be told to discard any envelopes with questionable content.

So please, please send in your votes (yes of course) and withhold the glitter, however tempting that may be. If you want to post glitter to someone, send it to the Liberals HQ.
